A Roadmap for Justice and Equality
We have faith that a society grounded in the principles of justice is possible. But to get there, we have to tackle the issues that impact our communities and ensure that elected leaders are held accountable for advancing a progressive policy agenda that addresses the underlying, structural barriers to equality. These are the issues we’ll stay focused on - a roadmap for change.
Our collective voice can’t be heard if it’s muzzled. The key to repairing our broken political system includes electing candidates committed to creating real change on the issues that matter most to Black Americans. It begins with expanding voting rights and access to the ballot by enacting smart common-sense policies that center people as the beneficiaries of our Democratic process.
The journey to justice is far from over but the road both starts and ends with community participation. Every level of the judicial system calls for real reforms that build up and invest in Black communities. Introducing and creating shifts needed at every level from the police departments, courts, and local government--with real reforms that build up and invest in Black Communities. With little to no justice in the current system, our communities have fallen victim to a failed drug war that’s produced over-incarceration. We need major shifts at every level—police departments, courts, and local government—to turn things around.
Justice Centered Solutions should:
End over-policing, military tactics, racial profiling, and qualified immunity
Redirect resources toward social services, mental health services, investment in community-driven approaches to public safety
Restructure police departments, civil, and criminal courts from the smallest practices to the biggest policies, including bail reform.
Terminate the “so-called” War on Drugs and provide solutions for its devastating effects.
Cease minimum sentencing and unjust jail time
Develop prevention services and programs that address violence against the LGBTQ community, new Americans, and violence within households.
End excessive fines and fees in low-income communities.
Stop driver’s license seizures for minor infractions.
The pandemic only further exacerbated the challenges Black communities face to reach economic equity. In an economy that favors large that racial, gender, and wealth gaps the pandemic only further underscored that we need to close the racial, gender, and wealth gaps. Creating opportunities to invest in housing, workplace, and financial equity.
